Limp Bizkit is making a huge comeback as of late, and what better way is there to celebrate than finally getting a next-gen remake of the legendary game, Fred Durst 64. If you were a 90’s kid, you remember this game fondly. While many gamers hail Super Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie as the most charming games from the N64 era, teenagers from that time frame know that Fred Durst 64 is the pinnacle of 90’s gaming. The game is as controversial as the real world figure, but it is all just in the spirit of nu-metal. The next-gen remake is being developed by Rockstar games and the studio swear that they will offer an immersive open-world beat-em-up experience that also retains all of the charm from the original. Fred Durst 64 is often credited with being incredibly ahead of it’s time. The graphics looked nearly photorealistic; it was easy to recognize the Limp Bizkit frontman of the real world within his 64 bit polygonal model. Enough about the game’s graphical prowess, let’s get to the real significance of the game. The 90’s is remembered as a great era and this is almost exclusively because of this game. The game is culturally significant for following an icon through an adventure that highlights the era so well. Whether the game captures the style, sound, and political landscape of the 90’s, it captures any subject it tackles so perfectly. Between Fred Durst’s JNCO jeans, the skate culture found within the game, and terrorizing suburban neighborhoods, the game is basically a 90’s simulator.

Another aspect worth highlighting is the game’s soundtrack. Rather than just play Limp Bizkit songs on loop, the game features a nostalgic and comforting mixture between the style of classic Nintendo or Grant Kirkhope and nu-metal. Fortunately Fred Durst 64 is not stuck in the 90’s. The critically-acclaimed game is bringing all of the 90’s nostalgia to the modern day. The timing is perfect too, as Limp Bizkit are making a major comeback right now. The game features an even larger open-world, with more photorealistic graphics fit for the modern day consoles. The game will also have an epilogue that features “Dad Vibes” Fred Durst learning how to live in 2021. The plot follows the cancelation of Limp Bizkit’s latest tour and features Fred Durst trying to readjust to the real world. Watch out though, the world is littered with anti-maskers who want nothing more than to give Fred covid-19. I think this game will be even more controversial than the original N64 game, but I applaud it for taking on such difficult topics.

Fred Durst 64: Re-Arranged will be releasing this Christmas for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

The DK Rap is officially old enough to have a beer. To celebrate we are throwing the greatest 21st birthday one could ever hope for. The DK Rap was created by musical genius Grant Kirkhope. You may remember Grant are the man who made your childhood amazing. The thing is, these games (Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye 007) and their soundtracks have aged beautifully. #5 – DK Rap To Relax/Study To

We are starting off this list with an absolute vibe. The DK Rap has never felt more modern and chill. If you have a paper to write, a research project due, or if you are currently writing an article about the rap from an old Donkey Kong game, this remix is perfect for you. This remix is bringing out a sense of productivity in me. I can see myself enjoying this for time to come. This song always reinvents itself every time it starts to get old (which is never).

#4 – Never Gonna DK Rap

This one is a classic. I am surprised the title of the video wasn’t ‘Donkey Kong 64 Switch Confirmed’. This track is a nostalgia trip. Whether you are remembering the original hit song by Rick Astley, or are just experiencing vivid memories of being Rick Rolled, either way this remix is a total time machine. I am a huge fan of this remix. I might even use it to Rick Roll people here on out.

#3 – DK Rapsody

Like the original track ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, this song is an absolute masterpiece. It is hard to believe art like this can even exist. The internet was created just to fulfil the prophecy of this remix being created. The piano really fits in with the emotional rapping. It really creates a whole new definition of the lyrics. It almost brings tears to my eyes. This remix brings a masterpiece full circle.

#2 – Bring Donkey Kong To Life

This remix is incredibly epic. Imagine playing Halo with your friends while jamming this. It really fits the “ass-kicking” nu-metal vibe. The lyrics and flow was always suited to have riffage behind them. This is the first remix on the list to feature additional guest vocals. Amy Lee lent her voice to this remix, and it sounds incredible. I feel like I am watching an action film while listening to this, but also in audience for an epic opera. This remix deserves the number 1 spot, but one other song is just too perfect. What could possibly beat this perfectly epic remix?

Honorable Mention – Steamed Hams

While this entry mostly isn’t a song (there is a song in the middle), it sure is a remix. The DK rap got the ‘Steamed Hams’ treatment, which is a popular style of modern youtube poops. The video is chaotic and hilarious. You will need a beer to make it through this one, as it is wild.

#1 – Remember The Crew

It has all come down to this. This list was difficult to compile, as each of these remixes have been incredible, but this one just has something special about it. Remember The Crew seriously sounds like a hit track. Featuring guest vocals by Linkin Park’s own Mike Shinoda, the track is crafted to be a hit. It sounds as if Mike Shinoda wrote the original ‘Remember The Name’ just for the DK Crew. I would find it impossible to believe that the DK Rap fits in this perfectly. Remember The Crew deserves the number 1 spot for hitting that special part of the brain that says “I am listening to a hit song right now”. This remix is one to remember forever. I will always remember the crew.

Top 5 Video Game Songs

5. Abracadavre – Kevin Sherwood

Kevin Sherwood – Abracadavre

This song goes hard. Starting with a creepy rendition of the Call of Duty Zombies theme song, the track leads into some nasty riffage. Kevin Sherwood did great producing this death metal track. The vocals by Elena Siegman are scary. First she starts whisper singing in a ghoulish way, and then breaks out into full screams. This track is no joke, and while it matches the zombies game mode well, it is hard to imagine most players could handle it.

4. The DK Rap – Grant Kirkhope

The DK Rap is just too cool. No one expected to be greeted with the DK rap. Imagine pushing in your Donkey Kong 64 cartage, then pulling it out and blowing in it, then putting it back in and jiggling it a bit, and then finally getting the game functioning. Immediately after you hear some record scratches, and now Cranky is taking it away. This was everyone’s introduction to Donkey Kong 64. This song was just too cool for any gamer at the time and maybe ever. Grant Kirkhope is an amazing composer for video games, and with this song his legacy was sealed. The song is even more epic once you mash it up other rock tracks. His work in the Banjo Kazooie series is phenomenal as well.

3. Live and Learn – Crush 40

Crush 40 – Live and Learn

Where do we begin with this one? What 9 year old didn’t nearly mosh in their bedroom and jump off their car bed. This track was way too cool for Sonic. Sega’s own Crush 40 killed it with this track. Super Smash Brothers Brawl brought this track back and it was used in nearly every custom stage. Live & Learn is amazing. It is truly hard to believe that this song was ever made for a Sonic game.

2. Rip & Tear – Mick Gordon

Doom is at a whole other level when it comes to video game music. Doom and Doom Eternal might as well just be interactive soundtracks. The music is scarier than the game itself. Composer Mick Gordon even played this song live at the Game Awards 2016 and it was insane. This track belongs with the legends of metal music in general. It is hard to imagine Mick Gordon’s work was produced for a video game.

1. Ludens – Bring Me The Horizon

Bring Me The Horizon – Ludens

Bring Me The Horizon have basically created a new genre. Starting with Ludens, the band began work on their new album Post Human. The album will be releasing in 4 segments, and the first segment, Survival Horror, is due to release on 10/30/2020. Post Human: Survival Horror is looking to be the soundtrack to gaming, and it has a fitting name to be so. Ludens was created for Kojima Production’s Death Stranding. While the game hasn’t stayed too relevant since release, Bring Me The Horizon has. Ludens is a masterpiece, and it will be hard to imagine a video game song soaring to such heights. The band has played the song live and it will likely be a setlist mainstay forever. This song is way too cool for nerdy gamers. Just wait for that breakdown.
