Previously, children would play through a new game in full after it releases, but Fortnite never ends. Elements of addiction run rampant throughout Fortnite, as it features in-game purchases and addicting leaderboards which makes up a majority of the game. The unique obsession the Fortnite fanbase has with the game has caused mental health professionals to act. In response, the DSM-5 will be including Fortnite Obsession Disorder within the new version of the manual.

Fortnite Obsession Disorder is classified as an addiction disorder, similar to gambling or substance abuse disorder. The specific addictive nature of the game is what makes it harmful for young minds. Professionals speculate that the addiction won’t stop with just the game alone. It may lead to more addictive behaviors into adulthood, which could have life damaging consequences.

Requirements For Diagnosis And Interventions

There are very specific requirements for a diagnosis of Fortnite Obsession Disorder. Firstly, the player must engage in at least 10 hours of gameplay a day. Secondly, the player must purchase at least $400 worth of costumes or cosmetic items a month. Lastly, the player must become aggressive when they lose a match. Each of these requirements must be met for a diagnosis to be made. If this sounds like someone you know, please inform their parents of this new disorder. Early intervention is the best way to help someone who suffers from the disorder. Another intervention tactic urges parents to log into Fortnite themselves in order to camp their own child.
